The most common reason for an extraction is tooth damage due to breakage or decay. If the infection or trauma has destroyed enough tooth structure to prevent restoration, Dr. Nosente Bollo-Kamara at Shoreham Dental in North York may recommend an extraction. There are also other reasons for tooth extraction such as:
- Extra teeth which are blocking other teeth from coming in
- Severe gum disease
- Orthodontic treatment
- Impacted wisdom teeth.
Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure in the adolescent years — to help eliminate other potential dental problems. Dr. Nosente Bollo-Kamara will recommend removing wisdom teeth (third molars) before they are fully developed, when the extraction is less complicated. If not removed, a wisdom tooth can become impacted or try to surface where there is no room in the mouth for it to grow. Other problems associated with impacted teeth include infection, decay of adjacent teeth, bite interference and gum disease.
